Aroostook County, Maine may be known for its potatoes but in the past few decades another two more crops have proven themselves to be well suited to our climate and short growing season: Broccoli and Cauliflower. Currently over 4,000 acres of broccoli are planted and harvested per year; with each acre yielding approximately 8,000 lbs. of broccoli the annual harvest is around 32 million pounds and growing as demand increases.. In Aroostook County the broccoli harvest begins in early July and runs through mid-October.
Maine broccoli can be found up and down the east coast and as far west as the Mississippi river.
